difficult question i guess..!!

q) Given k1 = 1500 N/m, k2 = 500 N/m , m1 = 2kg and m2 = 1kg. Find
(a) potential energy stored in the springs in equilibrium, and
(b) work done in slowly pulling down m2 by 8cm.

the image is not clear i knw... but just try to understand..!!

In equilibrium, let extensions be x1 , x2 , then using force balancing. Find these. It should be easy.

first part is perfectly easy...
but wha bout the second one...!!

Okay. Let again the further extensions in them be y1,y2. Obviously y1+y2=8.

Now again, balance forces and find y1,y2. The work done = Change is PE of the springs.
