[1]//the phrase "to put something or somebody in a particular location or position" itself means no. of arrangements.so as per dictionary i am correct...but as far as books like A.Dasgupta are concerned they take word place as divisions.
no. of ways to place x things in y boxes.
what does word place mean here either
(i)to distribute
OR
(ii)to arrange
i have seen most book authors have given answer with reasoning (i) to be correct...i.e. finding no of divisions!
but i think it is not correct interpretation the word place should correspond to reasoning (ii) i.e. no. of ways to arrange!
plz advice what's right
P.S. i know tht authors have rich experiences...and most of time they r right...but i think i am right here to question them[1]

I think you should refer to the dictionary.
My dictionary defines 'place' (verb) as-
to put something or somebody in a particular location or position

So If you are not ready to take our Interpretation, then you tick your option and we'll ours!! LOL :D
That's the more preferable way.
@VIVEK..
tu hamesha rivalry ke mood mein kyun rehta hai???....i m just clearing my doubts here....n i knew i will get many replies from guys who are not even sure whether they r definitely right or not tht's y i named it only for experts!
kunl here we will only distribute but not arrange , as the y boxes given here are identical , (i.e the question setter hasnt given any difference between those y boxes) , and if the setter wants arrangements ,then surely he will mention " y boxes are kept in a line and/or are labelled 1,2,3,..y
he will give you some hint that he wants arrangements , if he really wants it
