when SnCl2 is added to HgCl2 , then a white precipitate of Hg2Cl2 is formed.
SnCl2 + HgCl2 → Hg2Cl2 + SnCl4.
if further SnCl2 is added, then a grey precipitate of Hg metal is obtained along with SnCl4.
these are the analysis confirmatory tests for Sn and Hg

actually , when SnCl2 is added to HgCl2 , then Hg being at its highest oxidation state acts as oxidising agent and oxidises SnCl2 to SnCl4 and itself reduces to Hg2Cl2 i.e. the +1 oxidation state.
now,if this reaction of SnCl2 continues wid Hg2Cl2 , then Hg2Cl2 now gets reduced by SnCl2 to form metallic Hg and SnCl4 is also formed.
