yes i also ws thinking of grignard....
coz with that we can add a whole alkayl chain ata time but with -CN its one carbon addition at a time...

for the second one ,
i am posting a repetitive method
first add HCN then hydrolyse it then reduce it to ehanol
repeat the steps and u will get the product

never heard of the first reaction.
and @ rohan can't you think of a better synthetic method , dude try . I know u can do better. try Grignard reagents

i think for the 1st one, you meant Umbrella inversion, its same as inversion of configuration due to SN2 mechanism
