An alcohol A, when heated with conc. H2SO4 gives an alkene B. When B is bubbled through bromine water and the product is dehydrohalogenated with excess of sodamide, a new compound C is formed. C reacts with CH3Br to give D.D on reaction with dilute H2SO4 in presence of HgSO4 gives E. C on reaction with dilute H2SO4 in presence of HgSO4 gives F. F can also be obtained either by oxidizing A with dilute KMnO4 or by distillation of Calcium acetate.
