shldnt it be -y-(-x)=x-y ?? (product - reactant) ?

Diamond + O2 - y = CO2

Graphite + O2 - x = CO2

subtracting we get,

Diamond - y = Graphite - x

Graphite - x + y = Diamond!

so ΔH= y - x
