39Ans should be a). Aldol in only one direction. HCHO has no alpha hydrogen to lose. Ethanal will lose the alpha hydrogen, form the nucleophile which adds to C=O of HCHO and itself. So two products possible.
But I think we would have cannizzaro side products of HCHO ..
