Mg does not react with dry NH3 gas. But if they meant liquid NH3, then Mg dissolves forming ammoniated ions(violet). Mg+10NH3=[Mg(NH3)6]2++2[e(NH3)2]-. the ammoniated electrons absorb energy in the visible region of light and impart violet colour.
