AgF is soluble in water. why the other silver halieds (AgCl, AgBr, AgI) are not soluble in wateror sparingly soluble becoz solubility increases substantially in the presence of the corresponding halogen acids or salts thereof owing to the formation of complex compounds of the [AgX2]- type, where X represents halogens

  • Ayush Lodha I think the reason is that lattice energy predominates the hydration energy of water,as lattice energy depends on the size of ion and also their charges .The size of ions is inversely proportional to stability of the bond , and here AgF has a small anion fluorine so .it is easier for the water molecules to dissociate them into ions, whereas other halogen elements merged with Ag has a very bulky size which makes difficult for the water molecules to surround and to dissociate them into ions and so some are sparingly soluble and some are insoluble.
