A block of mas m is held by the hand over a spring (of spring constant k) which is kept on a table verticaly so that the block just touchesthe end of the spring. Now the block is let go. the vlock compresses the spring and comes to rest.Find the max. compression of the spring. Method:1: mgx=0.5kx2 so, x=2mg/k Method : 2: mg= kx so, x=mg/k which of the methods is incorrect and why???

method 2 is incorrect.

becoz it gives the equilibrium position.

but u want the max compression..

that means u want the PE of spring at the expense of total grav.PE.
so method 1.

hi kamalendu.....new user ??????????

basically if u just let it go energy will be conserved and ull resort to method 2 .........

if u slowly bring it to equilibriuim position ur exerting an external force and thus energy is not conserved!!!!!!!!
