let ice have density and volume of ρ and V respectively.

let the stone have density and volume d(>1) and v respectively.

when the system is floating water displaced=(dv+ρV)g1.g=dv+ρV

now ice melts and stone falls!!

ice gives ρV1=ρV of water

the stone sinks to displace V vol of water

so new water displaced=ρV+v of water<ρV+dv

thus water displaced decreases
and water level falls!!
