HAMSTER AND WHEEL PROBLEM

This is a really easy question if you can grasp the concept within

A small hamster is put into a circular wheel-cage which has a frictionless
central pivot,A horizontal platform is fixed to the wheel below the pivot.Initially, the hamster is at rest at one end of the platform

When the platform is released the hamster starts running but the platform and the wheel remain stationary.Determine how the hamster moves..

given distance of platform from center = d
radius of wheel r

i couldn't understand, once you said platform is fixed, then it is released but it is stationery. also the wheel is stationery, are everything except hamster stationery?

YES !!

as given the platform is a part of the wheel

then the hamster just moves forward isn't it, because everything else is stationery??

you have to find velocity as a function of time/ distance

it is already given that the hamster moves forward

let radius be r , length of platform=2l, dist. from centre to platform= z= √(r^2-l^2) let at time t, disp.=x then, md2x/dt2 * z= m g (l-x). from this equation, we get v=dx/dt ( solving it will be tedious) :(

not so tedious as you think

but u have obtained the right eqn

oops sorry, didn't notice. put X=x-l, then X=asin(wt)+bcos(wt). where w=√(g/z).
