minimum external diameter

A cast iron column has internal diameter of 200mm .What should be the minimum external diameter so that it may carry a load of 1.6 MN without the stress exceeding 90N/m^2 ????

If the column is hanging and the load is put at the bottom end, then maximum stress will occur at the point of suspension.

Hence, add the stress created by the weight of t he column and the external load and equate it to the maximum stress possible (in the limiting sense).

Otherwise, if the column is standing on ground and load is applied on top of it, maximum stress will occur at the bottom, but again the expression for stress remains the same...
