Glass sphere

A mark placed on the surface of a glass sphere is viewed through a glass prism form an oppositely directed position. If the diameter of the glass sphere is 20 cm, find the position of image if refractive index of glass is 1.5

given,

n1 = 1.5

n2 = 1

R= 20/2 = 10cm

u= - 40cm

v =?

thus,

n1/u + n2/v = (n1- n 2) / R

1/v - 1.5/u = 1-1.5/ 10

1/v = - 1/80

v= -80cm

which is the image distance

placing a prism in front of the sphere won't affect the image distance

u will be 20 cm i.e. the diameter of the sphere..

and v will therefore be

+40cm
