see we need to find Oxidation number of S in SCN^-

let it be x

x + 4 - 3 = -1 → x = -2

but bhaiiya how u decide tht the oxidation no. of nitrogen is -3 why it is not +5 or any other lying b\w..-3 to +5.........similar for carbon??????

Nitrogen is the most electronegative atom here so obviously it will be the one that will show negative oxidation number
carbon always shows postive oxidation number except for hydrides
and that too +4
