how did you get to this formula for calc the no of squares

no. of squares = n.p + (n-1).(p-1) + (n-2).(p-2) + ... (till the product becums zero)...

given n vertical and p horizontal lines

oh ok... sorry..

See the solution is that when u want to chose squares..

then they can be of side 1 or side length 2 .... so on till min(n,p)

FOr side of length 1 ...

there can be n.p squares..

for side of lenthg 2 .. .there will be (n-1)(p-1)

and so on...

Is this hint sufficient.. (acutally it is much more than a hint!)
