In how many different ways the letters of the word VECTOR can be placed in the 8 boxes of the given figure so that no row remains empty?

See..

there are 8 spots.. and there are 6 letters in vector

For each row to be "not" filled, the top row should have 4 of these letters and one of the other 2 rows should have 2 letters.
SO one row remains empty.

We take all the possible cases:

a) 2 in each of the 3 rows
b) 3 in first row, 2 in 2nd, 1 in 3rd
c) 3 in first , 1 in second and 2 in 3rd row
d) 4 in firts, 1 in second and 1 in 3rd row.

each of the terms of sky's expression corresponds to one of these (look carefuly :)
