If an object is not accelerating, there is no NET force acting on it, but there may still be forces acting in opposition.

Look,

F=ma.

If a is 0, F is 0, independent of m.

  • Debal Roy sayan let in a tug war two teams are pulling each other and we observe that there is no displacement of any team from initial point.Mind it two teams are applying forces. what is the value of acceleration of the string in this case?
  • Sayan Sinha Yes, you are right. What I had said is true only if one set of force acts on the body.
  • Sayan Sinha But I was not entirely wrong. In your tug of war, we should add up the forces applied by two teams which are F and -F which will again give 0.
