Negative scalar

Work, energy, potential etc. are all scalar, but they can have negative values too. How can scalar be negative? They should neither be positive nor be negative as they are independent of the direction.

P.S.: W=FScosΘ; F=vector; S=vector; vector.vector=scalar;
but cosΘ changes the scenario, is it not? Θ here gives the angle and hence the direction. So how can work be a scalar?
