a conceptual question of electromagnetics

In the arrengement shown here , one end of the spring just touches the surface of mercury contained in a metalic vessel,if the key is pressed on.

(1)the spring stretches,attains equilibriunm
(2)the spring compresses,attains equilibriunm
(3)the spring neither stretches nor compresses
(4)the spring oscilates vertically

as we switch on the current.........circuit is completed.....& the spring jerks out , again the circuit breaks & the spring tries to gain its original position.........bt as soon as spring touches the mercury surface, again circuit is completed & spring jerks...................it continues till current is flowing in the circuit.........................hence the springs oscillates

but why should the spring jerk out on completion of the circuit?

a simple one!!!!!!!

when switched on the solenoid is compressed due to mutual attraction between turns of solenoid......so its lower end jerks out of mercury......and circuit breaks but due to breaking of circuit magnetic field within solenoid vanishes away and the spring becomes relaxed again completing the circuit as lower end again comes in contact with mercury......and same cycle repeats again!!!!!!
