Consider the situation shown in the figure. the capacitor A has a charge q on it whereas B is uncharged. What amount of charge will appear on the capacitor B a long time after the switch S is closed:

(A) zero
(B) q/2
(C) q
(D) 2q

Hint: work done in going from one plate of the capacitor to the other plate of the other capacitor (exactly in betwen the two capacitors) has to be zero..

So electric field there has to be zero...

so take the distribution as...

q, x, -q-x, 0

The field in between needs to be zero..

so q+x=-q-x

so x=-q

So no charge flows... :)
