A capacitor of capacitance Ct = 1.0 F withstands the maximum voltage Va----6.0 kV while a capacitor of capacitance C2 = 2.0 F, the maximum voltage V----4.0 kV. What voltage will the system of these two capacitors withstand if they are connected in series?

Hints:

1. Calculate the max charge that each capacitor can store

2. When in series, the charge appearing on both capacitors is same.

3. What is the max charge that can appear?

4. Calculate the voltage across each capacitor using V = Q/C

5. Calculate the total voltage across both capacitors.

Asish Mahapatra Yes, in series they will be equal. q1 = 6, q2 = 8 simply is the maximum amount of charge that C1 and C2 can store respectively. They can also store less if needed, but cannot store higher than those limits.

First connect the 2 capacitors in series and get a five star from Akash sir :D

Akash Anand Here you have to connect two capacitors in series along with a battery, if there is no battery then you get a five start for the same :P
