cbse 2004 plz try

In the potentiometer circuit shown the balance point (null point) is at "X" . State with reason where balance point will be shifted when
a) resistance "R" is increased,keeping all other parameters constant
b) resistance "S" is increased,keeping "R" constant
c) cell "P" is replaced by another cell whose emf is lower than that of cell "Q"

please explain i am unable to understand the solution given in the book!! are the answers given in book correct???

See R increases therefore the drop across R increases therefore the pd across X and A reduces therefore we move the jockey towards the B.

Now if S is changed it does not change since X point is the point when current in the branch is zero therefore X is independent of S
