gauss law

actually its not a question it something hat i hv thought over for a long time.....
we generally assume in guasss law that electric field is symmetric like a pnt charge
that can be easily proved

now lets try to find the electirc field due to some complicated object like a sphere whose charge from 0<r is 0 and afer that from r-R is q uniformly suppose we have to find the electric field at a pnt r<X<R we asssume that electric field line are radial n we solve

my proposition is that we do this coz we already know this to be true from other calculation like we hv already calculated that electric field is like this varying with r but why not a ellipse or anything or something

am i right.....?

firstly

this statement is wrong

we generally assume in guasss law that electric field is symmetric like a pnt charge

gauss law is valid for any closed surface !

can u post the exact problem
may be i can hlp

yes i agree to the previous post.
gauss' law is applicable for any closed surface ...but the thing is it becomes complicated to apply it in non-symmetrical set-ups.coz then it wud be difficult to find a proper gaussian surface.
