magnetic force

a charged particle of mass 2 kg and chrge 2 C is projected with velocity v = 8i + 6j m/s in horizontal plane and there if magnetic field 2k (k cap)

find the coeff of friction such that the particle travels in spiral path b4 comin to rest. and also find the distance travelled by the particle in 12 seconds if coeff of fric is 0.1

i guess the answer is 0.1 .. im not sure..it is one of the options in a multi correct question.

the magnetic field is perpendicular to the the velocity so it will move in a circle....u can find the radius by equating

mv2/r = qvB

r = mv/qB

now the frictional force is μmg and is opposing the motion so the particle will decelerate,

hence, 1/2mv22 - 1/2mv2 = -μmgx2πr [work energy theorem]

1/2mv22 = 1/2mv2 - μmg2πr

therefore........μmg2πr < 1/2mv2....now put the values....

so according to my calculations, the answer will be anything less than 1/2Ï€
