reasoning

a metal sphere is suspended from a nylon thread.initially sphere is unharged.when a positively charged glass ro is brought close, sphere is drawn towards rod,if it touches rod,it suddenly flies away.explain.

i think reason is as follows=

firstly the sphere is attracted due to induction.on,touching the rod some of negative charge from sphere gets transferred to rod due to which they repel.

is it correct!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

first part of your explanation is correct..

in the second part you have to think that the forces just vanish.. (the attractive force..)

there is an uncharged rod and a charged metal sphere..

no.. i think it must be lik dis..

negative charges induced are passed thro d thread thereby inducing positive charges in metal sphere...

pls do correct me byah..

sir,if in second part it is so,then the sphere should not repel instead as u said it is charged and rod gets uncharged they should still remain attracting due to induction by sphere this time.

yes john. . but what will happen is that it will be pulled back by some force like gravitation etc..

the statement that you are making is possible because you could argue that the whole sphere becomes -vely charged and then it passes that charge to the rod

but another arguement could be that as soon as a little bit charge is interchanged between the rod and the sphere the rod and the sphere will separate..

so i think it is a question of which one has to be justified :)

yes, that is what i wrote in first reply.thatis when some negative charge is transferred from sphere to rod they both become equally charged and repel.

btw is nylon a conductor?????????

ya.. charges can pass thro it..

not in d sense dat it can conduct electricity...

it jus can jus allow d charges thro it...
