can someone explain these??????????

i read the following from a book but i am not able to understand how the generalised formula is given.plz explain after reading these "the no. of spectral lines produced when electron returns from n2 to n1 energy level =( n2- n1) (n2- n1+1) /2 " general form: the no of spectral lines produced when the electron from nth shell to ground state = n(n-1) /2 how r they getting these formula any derivation there?? plz explain the concept...................

plz forgive me if my questions are appearing silly..........

for example take n=5

in the first case 5 spectral lines are observed
in the second case 2
in the third case only 1

like this taking all the possible spectral lines for transistion from 5 to 1, the number u get is 10.

u'll learn the summation techniques in the due course.

for n to 1

case ending with 1

n→1
n-1→1
....
2→1 so n-1 cases

case ending with 2

n→2
....
3→2 so n-2 cases

similar cases

so its n-1 + n-2 + ......1 = n(n-1)/2

similar for n2,n1 derivation
