A disc of radius R is rolling purely with COM velocity vo on a flat horizontal floor when it hits a step in the floor of height R/4.The corner is sufficiently rough to prevent any slipping of the disc against itself.What is the COM velocity just after the impact?

  • Akash Anand Conserve angular momentum about the point where it strikes the step, since at that point force will pass through the COM so it wont produce any torque. For that you need the formula of angular momentum of a body about any arbitrary point= Iw+mvr

You need to conserve angular momentum about the point where it hits the step. Remember that impulse will not produce any angular impulse as it will pass through COM.

Angular momentum of any body about any point = Iw+mvr
