Simple Harmonic Motion

1)Can simple harmonic motion take place in a non inertial frame? If yes, should the ratio of the force applied with the displacement be constant?

2)Can a potential energy in a SHM be negative? Will it be so if we choose zero potential energy at some point other than the mean position?

3)The total energy E in SHM = 1/2*mω2A2.which of the following statements are most appropriate:-

a)The energy is increased because the amplitude is increased

b)The amplitude is increased because the energy is increased.

4)A platoon of soldiers marches on a road in steps according to the sound of a marching band. The band is stopped and the soldiers are ordered to break the steps while crossing a bridge. Why?

I think the potential energy will never be negative.

For 3. I think it should be (b).

For 4, It is because of the phenomenon of Resonance. If the frequency of the marching troops accidentally matches that of vibrating frequency of the bridge, Resonance will take place and the Resulting Amplitude will be very large which would set the bridge in motion and for which it may collapse.

For 2. Will it be so if we choose zero potential energy at some point other than the mean position is correct I think.

For 1. should the ratio of the force applied with the displacement be constant TRUE

Am I right.?? Tell na!

b)The amplitude is increased because the energy is increased.

In SHM the total energy is always constant, but I feel the statement (b) will be more appropriate, though not sure. So please help [1]

Well I think, Bridge has its own natural angular frequency and if it is subjected to a strong external force due to the marching of the soldiers, it may set the bridge in resonating vibrations and due to this resonating vibrations which if matches any of the bridge's natural angular frequency, the resulting oscillations may rupture it.

@ Vivek, we both has same thoughts for (4), so I think its correct.

Don't know about other ones. Let the seniors answer them.
