Four equidistant slits of the same width are made one above the other on an opaque sheet & illuminated by a monochromatic parallel beam of light perpendicular to the sheet.Point P & Q are on the screen directly in front of the lowest slit & the slit just above the lowest slit respectively.At point P the path difference between the topmost and lowermost slit is 4.5 λ .The intensity created at P by a single slit is Io.

For 1 path diff is given 4.5λ=3dsinθ=3d(3d/D)=9d2/D
d2/D=4.5/9=0.5λ

for 2 Δx=2d(2d/D)=4d2/D=4(0.5λ)=2λ

for 3 Δx=d(d/D)=0.5λ

for straight one. Δx=0

now 2 and 4th are in phase and 1 and 3 out of phase.. so

net intensity is zero at P..
