jee 2008 ques

In a Young’s double slit experiment, the separation between the two slits is d and the wavelength of the
light is λ. The intensity of light falling on slit 1 is four times the intensity of light falling on slit 2. Choose
the correct choice(s).
(A) If d = λ, the screen will contain only one maximum
(B) If λ < d < 2λ, at least one more maximum (besides the central maximum) will be observed on the
screen
(C) If the intensity of light falling on slit 1 is reduced so that it becomes equal to that of slit 2, the
intensities of the observed dark and bright fringes will increase
(D) If the intensity of light falling on slit 2 is increased so that it becomes equal to that of slit 1, the
intensities of the observed dark and bright fringes will increase

plz give complete sol.

A) and B)
coz,
if d =lambda...then, we wud have just one maxima at the centre...there wud be no maxima anywhere else becoz, the maximum path diff. that can be obtained is d which is at y=infinity... so the only next possible maxima cud be at +-infinity...so A) is rite..

same way if lambda<d<2 lambda...there wud be 1 point between infinity and zero where the pathdifference wud be lambda...so we have another maxima somewhere...hence even B) is rite...

C) and D) are wrong coz the intensity of the minimas are always zero..so no increase...
