Light Energy

A point source of light is placed at a distance h below the surface of a large and deep lake.Show that the fraction for the light energy that escapes directly from water surface is independent of height h and it is given by

f=1/2[1-√1-(1/μ)2]

μ be the refractive index of the lake water

how did u got the sphere ureka

light rays travel in all directions ....
i think this should explain

yes u rite philip but light travels with different velocities in different directions and i think the diag given by eureka is at a particular instant.At a instant there can be no wavefront like a sphere.it will be a sphere but its radius will be different in different medium.

sankara.. I think you are a bit confused on this one..

I am at a loss how to explain this.. but what eureka has done is correct.

Until the wavefront encounters the water surface, It will keep travelling.

It is more like solid angle..
or you could understand this by the conical part of the wave front.

i think u can also get an idea
the total flux coming out of the cone is q/ε(1-cosθ)

this analogy can be useful as the wavefront there is also spherical and the light coming out is of a conical surface area
