2)Which one will you prefer for the rectification of low AC voltages - a Si diode or a Ge diode? Why?

Ge-diode should be used as it has lower knee voltage than Si-diode.So,there will be less wastage of energy.

3)Why a transistor cannot be used as a rectifier?

If a transistor is to be used as a rectifier then either of its Emitter-base or Collector-base part is to be used. But the base is very lightly doped in a transistor.Hence,it can't be used.
