A screen is placed at a certain distance from a narrow slit which is illuminated by a parallel beam of monochromatic light of wavelength λ.
if d is the width of the slit,what is the angular width of the central maximum?

(a)sin-1(λ/d)
(b)2sin-1(λ/d)
(c)sin-1(2λ/d)
(d)sin-1(λ/2d)

I think this is a straight forward question....

This is single slit difraction pattern
The first minima occurs at path difference of λ

sinθ=θ=λ/d

angular width is sinα=sin2θ=2θ=2λ/d

α=sin-1(2λ/d)

I am sorry to break this to you all, the correct answer is (b)

Sorry...I made a mistake by assuming 2θ to be very small

sinθ=λ/d

so α=2θ

α=2sin-1(λ/d)
