Cope elimination you mean? (It obeys Hoffman rule) I suppose so...rather I think the supplication of heat is not shown. It is required to atleast start off gas evolution(CO2). Once the gas starts evolving the process becomes spontaneous.
This step also resembles ester pyrolysis(which is again governed by Hoffman rule, so it's possible that this is a Cope elimination)

here is it.......(see reactivity)

yup its ninhydrin's reaction...used for estimation of amines

wiat i wll post some link..........ahve seen the reaction....

Okay,so this is not tht self-made-classic-type tht i was thinkin' of :P...& Yes, Pritish, Stable then :)

& If this Qn has been a part of Aieee, i think we shuldn't miss out then.
Thnx Ankur fr the info.

actually, there exists this reaction:
word 2 word:
All alpha-amino acids(with primary -NH2 group) react with ninhydrin to form an intense purple colored complex. The reaction is used to detect amino acids on a wide variety of substrates as finger prints of criminal..
and this blue color is called as Ruhemann's purple (.. it is also asked earlier in one of AIEEE paper)

Avik...those two OH's are stable due to chelation.

Source(s) : govind.

Ridiculous...!!

Pehli baat toh yeh hai ki knowing tht 2 -OH(s) aint stable on a single carbon, i wud have eliminated an H2O in the beginning itself n made it into a carbonyl group....phir H2N-Z ka addition n all cud have followed.

This is another one frm the Arihant's self-made-classic-types :P ...So, we must leave it fr them only.

I really doubt they will ask such tough questions in AIEEE.

In the 4th step, how does water escape by itself - u need to apply heat or something to it.

Pritish if u don't mind please post the mechanism yaar [1]

The mechanism is horrifying. I have the solution. And there was another one regarding intramolecular aldol...jismein 6 member ring na banke 5 member ring ban raha tha. Actually the options didn't have the correct six membered ring, so I was forced to choose 5 member ring over 6! Blasphemy.
