what is the effect of SeO2/H2O on a carbonyl compound?

SeO2 is an oxidising agent ( selective ) oxdoses C α to carbonyl.

thus propanone on treatment with SeO2 gives 2-oxopropanal ( forgive my nomenclature if wrong.hopefully the message is conveyed. :)

a C=O group gets introdused in the alpha position of carbonyl carbon .

no sky ! A C=O is not introduced an existing C is oxidised.

jus in the figure , we need to write a C=O at the alpha position naa ?

i wrote that only...

ofcourse it is oxidies... SeO2 is an oxidising agent... :P

i see it oxidises only 1 alpha carbon,what about preference to alpha carbon in a ketone
