CH3-CH(C2H5)-CH2-CH(C2H5)-CH3

Y do we call it as 3,5-di methyl heptane>?

y can' t we call it as 2,4-diethly pentane?

this is bcoz it is against the longest chain rule.
you have to first choose the longest straight chain possible and then accordingly name the compound.

bcoz in nomenclature, we always take the longest chain. here taking 2,4-diethly pentane would give us 5 carbon alkane group while taking 3,5-di methyl heptane will gv us 7 membered carbon chain. i hope i cleared u?
