Was it benzene?

was it benzene or one of its substituted compounds which was first known to the humans?What could have been the possible reason for this!

i think it is the substituted compounds which was first known because of their applications when compared to benzene.

"Michael Faraday first isolated and identified benzene in 1825 from the oily residue derived from the production of illuminating gas, giving it the name bicarburet of hydrogen." - which makes it pretty obvious what came first, the chicken(benzene) or the egg(its substituted compounds).

No.It was not benzene.It was urea synthesised by Wohler.
