see, in lithium, when it loses 1 electron, it has 1 shell while, inmagnesium, on loss of 2 electrons, it has still 2 shells...

its same polarizing power...size concept later..

and 1 thing more...its comparable, and not similar...mg has big...think wid common sense , how can it b same, while it has 1 more shell!!!!

but, yes, they r comparable...let me check out on wikepedia whatz the size of both....
