At high temp...

At high temperaturs we hav to consider vibrational energy along with trans and rotational.... now at high temp.
cv=3R/2 for monoatomic
Cv>5R/2 for diatomic gases xplain.......

sriraghav..

a molecule with two atoms can have vibration along the axis. this is neglected because at lower temperature we have much lower vibrations.

You can kind of visualize this as two balls attached to a spring.

But in a monoatomic molecule there is no spring kind of thing. there is no vibrational energy.

so even at high temp, there are only 3 degrees of freedom

for a diatomic gas,

at lower temperature, there will e 3 translational and 2 rotational degrees of freedom.

but as temp increases, there is some vibrational energy.. that makes
Cv>5R/2

But for all practical purposes in exam always take Cv=5R/2
