a gas is contained in a metallic container fited with a piston. the piston is suddenly moved in to compress the gas and is maintained at this positon. as time passes the pressure of the gas in the cylinder :
1) increases
2) decreases
3) remains constant
4) increases or decreases depending on the nature of the gas

the answer is given as 2) decreases.
please explain it to me...

when the piston is compressed suddenly , it is done adiabatically (dQ=0).
thus when the volume suddenly decreases, the temp and pressure rise considerably.
thus heat is developed in the system.

after some time , the gas loses the heat to the surroundings and thus the temp. and press. of the gas decreases.
