THERMAL EXPANSION

a railway track (made of iron) is laid in winter when the average temperature is 180C . The track consists of sections of 12.0m placed one after the other . how much gep should be left between two such sections so that there is no compression during summer when the maximum temperature goes to 480C? given that coefficient of linear expansion of iron =11*10-8/0C.

the tracks expand simultaneously in both directions.. now, between two consecutive sections, the gap is suppose x. At expansion one track will expand x/2 and so will the other. Now, total expansion of any one section is x...

So, the expansion can be treated as the expansion of a single rod.

12+x = 12 + 12*11*10-8*30
==> x = 3.96 * 10-5 m
