when you add both you will get the actual graph..

and at x=b is negative ...
then there is always atleast 1 root lying between a and b..
provided the function is continuous in [a,b]. ...
that is wat they had shown in the proof..
f(c)<0 and f(d)>0 so there is atleast one root between c and d.
